About us
A history of Wells Hill
Well Hill Lawn Bowling Club was founded in 1929 and is still going strong!
The Club lies on the shoreline of ancient Lake Iroquois, formed at the end of the Ice Age some 13,000 years ago. The first peoples to inhabit the land were the Huron-Wendat who came around 1400, followed by the Haudenosaunee around 1600 and the Mississaugas of the Credit. In 1805 the North shore of Lake Ontario was purchased from the First Nations peoples under Treaty 13. The Toronto Purchase was finally resolved in 2010. The bowling green is situated on land originally owned by Sir Henry Pellatt, the magnate who built Casa Loma. The City acquired the land in 1912 and designated it as a park.
In 2018 the Club closed while the Wychwood Library, a Carnegie Library designed by Eden Smith, was renovated. The Club re-opened in 2024.
